In 1993, 71-year-old Jipan Vakic, a local school caretaker, brought his wife, Malina, with him. Malina fell on the bank of a pond after being shot by the hunters. He picked her up from there and gave her shelter. Malina spends her winter in a storage building, which Vakich calls Improvised Africa. It has a stork habitat, a temperature control system and an aquarium. In the spring, Vakich built a huge rooftop nest for Malina. Malina's companion Klepitan arrives to teach her children to fly and returns to Africa with them when they return to Africa. And Malina stays with Vakich. "I took Malina with me while I was fishing," Vakich said. Because, due to physical disability, he is not able to go back to far away Africa even if he wants to. We watch TV together. আমাদের দেশে যত পখি আছে তার ভিতরে সারসই সব চেয়ে বড়। সারসের গায়ের অধিকাংশ পালকই ধূসর, মাথা উপরে পালক থাকেনা, পা ২টা লালচে। এরা খাল, বিল প্রভৃতি জলাশয়ের ধারে চড়ে বেড়ায় তাই একে কূলচর পাখিদের মধ্যে ধরা হয়। সুউচ্চ এই পাখিরা লম্বা লম্বা পা ফেলে জলাভূমিতে ঘুরে বেড়ায়। ইউরোপ,উত্তর আমেরিকা,এশিয়ায় ছড়িয়ে আছে এদের নানা প্রজাতি। গরমের সময় সাইবেরিয়াতেও এদের দেখা মেলে। এরা পোকা মাকর, শামুক, ব্যাঙ, গিরগিটি, নেংটি ইঁদুর, মাছ ও ছোটো জলজ প্রাণী ধরে খায় আবার কচি শাকপাতা,মূল,কন্দ, ধান, গম, যবও খায়।মাঝেমধ্যে ক্ষুধার্ত সারস বাসা ছেড়ে যাবার আগে নিজের বাচ্চাকেই খেয়ে ফেলে।

এগুলো দলবেঁধে বাসা বাধে ও বাচ্চা প্রসব করে সাগর অথবা হ্রদপারের ঝোপঝাড়ে। পুরুষ সারস কোন পুলকিত মুহূর্তে এই পালকগুচ্ছ ফুলিয়ে নারী সারসকে বাসায় অবস্থান নেয়ার আহবান জানায়। ডিম পারে বর্ষা মৌসুমে, সে সময় ডাল পালা, খর কুটো, ঘাস ইত্যাদি জড়ো করে ভেলার মত করে তার উপর ডিম পারে। যাতে শিয়াল, কুকুর বা অন্য বন্য প্রাণী কোন ক্ষতি সাধন করতে না পরে। ঘলাটে সাদা রঙের ২টা ডিম দেয়।নারী ও পুরুষ উভয় সারসই ডিমে তা দেয়। তিন সপ্তাহ ধরে।

এরা এরা দল বেঁধে জোড়ায় জোড়ায় চরে বেড়ায় আর তাদের মধ্যে নাকি খুব ভাব থাকে। ১ জোড়া সারসের ভিতর যদি কোন একটা কোন রকমে মারা পড়ে তবে অন্যটি শোকে আহার নিদ্রা ত্যাগ করে।

সারস ৯৩-১০২ সে.মি. পর্যন্ত লম্বা হয় আর পাখার দৈর্ঘ ১৫০-১৬০ সে.মি., ওজনে ২-৩.৫ কেজি হয়। পুরুষ এবং মেয়ে প্রায় একই রকম। এর ইংরেজী নাম স্টক। এরা খুবই শান্ত, মানুষই এদের প্রধান শত্রু তবুও এরা কুকুর, বিড়াল আর মানুষের মাঝেই বসবাস করতে চায়। একটি সারস যুগল দম্পত্তির ভালোবাসার কাহিনী নিচে তুলে ধরা হলো।

একটি পুরুষ সারস প্রতিবছর হাজার হাজার মাইল উড়ে পাড়ি দিয়ে দেখা করতে যায় তার অতি ভালোবাসার সঙ্গিনীর সাথে। যে কিনা প্রতিবন্ধকতার কারণে উড়তে অক্ষম। এমন বিরল প্রেমের নিদর্শন দেখা গেল ক্রোয়েশিয়ার এক সারস দম্পতির মাঝে। ক্লেপিতান ও মালিনা নামের দুটি পাখির প্রেম কাহিনী যেন চলচিত্রকেও হার মানায় এবং গল্প কাহিনীকেও হার মানায়।

একটি প্রতিবেদন থেকে জানা গেছে এই বিস্ময়কর প্রেম কাহিনী। গত মার্চ মাসে ক্লেপিতান পূর্ব ক্রোয়েশিয়ার ব্রদস্কি ভারস নামের ছোট গ্রামটিতে ফিরে এসেছিল। টানা ১৬ বছর ধরেই এই নিয়ম চালিয়ে যাচ্ছে সে।  সুদূর দক্ষিণ আফ্রিকা থেকে শীতকালে উড়ে ক্রোয়েশিয়া ‍আসে এই সারস পাখি, সেখানে তার সঙ্গীনি মালিনার সাথে দেখা হয় তার। এই সারস দম্পত্তির রয়েছে ৬২ টি বাচ্চা। প্রতিবছর মিলনে সেই সংখ্যা দিন দিন বেড়েই চলেছে। তাদের এই দূর পাল্লার প্রেমের কারণে ক্রোয়েশিয়ায় বেশ বিখ্যাত এই সারস যুগল।

স্থানীয় এক স্কুলের তত্ত্বাবধায়ক ৭১ বছর বয়সী বৃদ্ধ জিপান ভকিচ ১৯৯৩ সালে মালিনা নামের স্ত্রী সারসটিকে নিজের কাছে নিয়ে এসেছিলেন। শিকারীদের গুলির আঘাতে আহত হয়ে একটি পুকুরের পাড়ে পড়েছিল মালিনা। তাকে সেখান থেকে কুড়িয়ে এনে আশ্রয় দেয় তিনি। মালিনা তার শীতকাল অতিবাহিত করে একটি স্টোরেজ ভবনে, যাকে ভকিচ ইমপ্রোভাইজড আফ্রিকা নামে ডাকেন। এখানে সারসের বসবাস উপযোগী একটি বাসা, তাপমাত্র নিয়ন্ত্রনের ব্যবস্থা এবং অ্যাকুরিয়াম আছে। বসন্তকালে ভকিচ মালিনার জন্য ছাদে এক বিশাল বাসা তৈরি করেন। মালিনার সঙ্গি ক্লেপিতান এসে তার বাচ্চাদেরকে উড়তে শেক্ষায় এবং আফ্রিকায় ফেরার সময় তাদেরকে সাথে নিয়ে আফ্রিকা ফিরে যায়। আর মালিনা রয়ে যায় ভকিচের সাথে। ভকিচ জানান, আমি মাছ ধরার সময় মালিনাকে সাথে নিয়ে যাই। কারণ, শারীরিক অক্ষমতার জন্য সে চাইলেও সুদূর আফ্রিকায় ফিরে যেতে পারছে না। আমরা একসাথে টিভি দেখি। আমি যদি তাকে উদ্ধার না করে পুকুরটির পাড়ে রেখে আসতাম তাহলে হয়তো তাকে কোন শিয়াল খেয়ে ফেলতো। কিন্তু আমি তার ভাগ্য পরিবর করেছি। আর এখন মালিনা জীবনের দ্বায়িত্বও আমার। ক্লিপিতানের পায়ে একটি ট্র্যাকিং রিং পরিয়ে দেওয়া আছে, যার ফলে তার গতিবিধি জানা সম্ভব হয়। এর ভিত্তিতে জানা যায়, তার বসবাস দক্ষিন আফ্রিকার কেপটাউনের খুব কাছাকাছি। মালিনার কাছ থেকে সে ১৪,৫০০ কি.মি. দূরে বসবাস করে। তাদেরকে একসাথে হতে হলে ক্লিপিতানকে এম মাসের ও বেশী সময় ধরে উড়ে আসতে হয়।
